Equine internal medicine deals with the function, diagnosis, pathology, and treatment of the internal body systems of the horse. It is part of the comprehensive specialty services offered by Atlantic Equine Services. All veterinarians at AES are proficient in the latest diagnostics in the field, especially our board certified equine internal medicine specialist (Diplomate ACVIM) Dr. Jacqueline Bartol. We have the ability to perform body system evaluations to diagnose and manage health and performance problems involving the respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, neurologic, dermatologic and cardiovascular systems. This also includes the diagnosis of organ dysfunction affecting the kidneys and liver as well as neoplastic disorders. Medical evaluations can be performed at the farm or at our facility. A systematic approach including a physical examination, laboratory work, and advanced diagnostics are used as needed to diagnose your horse. We provide hematologic and clinical chemistry evaluations, thoracic and abdominal ultrasonography, video endoscopy and gastroscopy as well as ECG exams. A treatment and management plan is then formulated specifically for your horse to optimize health and performance.

Conditions commonly investigated include:

  • Chronic colic syndrome
  • Diarrhea
  • Respiratory issues (heaves, pneumonia…)
  • Neurologic disorders (EPM, Wobblers, THO, EMND…)
  • Skin disorders (hives, allergies, lymphangitis, sarcoids, melanomas…)
  • Gastric and hind gut ulcers
  • Endocrine issues (Cushing’s, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance syndrome…)
  • Anhidrosis
