Stem Cell Therapy for Sport Horse Injuries

Innovative biologic therapies using stem cells have grown (pun intended) in the treatment of tendonitis, osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal disorders, and laminitis in sport horses. Stem cells originate in the horse’s body and are essential to maintaining the health of soft tissues and organs and for regeneration post injury.

In equine sports medicine, mesenchymal stem cells are generally used and can differentiate into tendon, cartilage, bone, and fat. These cells come from adipose fat tissue or from bone marrow and when injected into injured tendons, they can help in the healing process and reduce scar tissue formation by producing tissue that resembles original tissue. This new tissue formation also helps to reduce the risk of re-injury at the site.

Stem cells may also be injected into joints to increase the function of the limb and reduce pain for horses diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

Consult with one of our veterinarians if you have questions about stem cell therapy treatment options.
